Youth and Community

Training

Global Connections deliver training to Senior Council members throughout West and South Wales, as well as youth workers in youth clubs and schools on all aspects of ESDGC (formally known as Global Youth Work).  We can help youth workers plan and deliver sessions which incorporate ideas of Citizenship, Globalisation, Fair Trade, and Sustainable Development, all of which encourage young people to think critically about the world around them, and begin to make links between local and global issues.

Workshops

We deliver Workshops on all aspects of ESDGC ourselves, to children and young adults up to 25, though focusing mostly on 11-19 year-olds.
These can be delivered through the medium of Welsh on request.

After School Clubs

Need help setting up After Schools clubs? We can offer expertise and support to existing ones, by planning and liaising with Youth Workers and teachers in schools to enhance the opportunities for young people.  This also includes the Alternative Curriculum. We can liaise with other agencies (eg. The National Parks) to be partners in these projects and offer additional support and resources.
Recent projects have included helping to set up a Green Club in Bush School, Pembroke, and re-launching the Eco-club at Ysgol Dewi Sant, St. David's, and supporting the Gardening Club at Ysgol Bro Gwau

Resources

Global Connections have many ESDGC resources for Youth Clubs and After-School clubs. These included workshops, videos, books, games, quizzes and power point presentations on all aspects of ESDGC.  As for the formal sector, resources are usually available to borrow for a given period of time.  If you wish to access them, please telephone to arrange it.  We can also provide a list of websites which provide ESDGC resources.

The lastest resource for the Youth Sector printed by Global Connections is the Global Youth Pack (2nd edition) which was recently completed. This contains a wide variety of activities and game on ESDGC to work through or dip into.  Copies of this will be available from the end of May 2008.

Bilingual resources

Many of the above resources are available in Welsh on request.  The Welsh version of the Global Youth Pack will be available later in 2008.

Past Youth Projects: Not sure about any details of these – probably best to ask Chris and Janie if there were any good/interesting projects or events which would look good on here, and who was involved etc.

Fair Trade

We also work for the Wales Fair trade Forum, and recently  took over the running of the Fairtrade Schools scheme, which began in September 2007.  Working with schools in Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire, we provide teachers with training, information, teaching resources and ideas to do with Fair Trade that they can use in the classroom. We provide a link with Traidcraft and other Fairtrade traders who can sell them wholesale goods, and come into schools to do assemblies and presentations.
The latest successful event was on May 16th, in the National Botanic Gardens, where pupils from 30 schools, accompanied by their teachers, took part in an afternoon of Fairtrade activities and games run by Izzie Pullen and Janie Pridham, our Education Officer.
