Core information relating to the coronavirus

The coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has consumed news channels in recent weeks, and so much information and reporting surrounding new cases can at times be overwhelming.

We have been carefully monitoring the situation and to help establish the facts, we have sourced key information and sites that will help you determine how COVID-19 may impact your work and ministries, and to help identify any measures you need to consider implementing.

We hope that you find this information helpful but if you have any further questions or concerns, please contact us via info@globalconnections.org.uk

ACCESSING THE LATEST UPDATES

To ensure you are taking advice from the latest findings, we suggest you refer to the following sources for information:

EMPLOYMENT LAWS AND RIGHTS

The medical situation is of course rapidly changing, and guidance will change with it. The legal situation is also changing from day to day.

  • Responding to the coronavirus: CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development). Wide range of CIPD resources and guidance and links to external resources - freely accessible to all and updated regularly.

  • ACAS has also published some useful advice for employers and employees which is updated daily.

  • Covid-19: Guidance for employers and businesses: Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and Public Health England, 25 February 2020.

  • Sandy Adirondack (Governance and legal information for voluntary organisations) sends some helpful updates via email. You can sign up to receive Sandy Adirondack’s e-bulletins with helpful information relating to COVID-19 here: http://www.sandy-a.co.uk/

TRAVEL INSURANCE

The number of insurance companies providing cover to our members makes it difficult to provide specific guidance in this area. The general view appears to be that most insurance companies will base their policy decisions on foreign travel advice from the FCO. If the FCO deem an area ‘safe for travel’ it is unlikely that a policyholder will be entitled to claim against the policy. Only if the travel destination falls within an area deemed ‘unsafe’ by the FCO may insurance companies pay out on a claim. Given the potential for variance between insurers, it is advised that you consult with your policy provider to clarify their position and to determine whether the policy held still provides the necessary level of cover.

ACCESS TO FREE NHS TREATMENT (IN ENGLAND) FOR MISSION PARTNERS VISITING THE UK

Please note that COVID-19 was added to the list of infectious diseases within the NHS (Charges to Overseas Visitors) Regulations in January, which means, as for other infectious diseases, there will be no charge made to any overseas visitor for any diagnostic testing for the coronavirus, and no charge for any treatment if the result is positive. So please reassure your mission partners. (For any other needs for access to NHS secondary care, the normal rules apply.)

SUPPORTING ISOLATED INDIVIDUALS

The effects of isolation can be felt by many in the wake of incidences like the coronavirus outbreak and at times it can be difficult to know how to support those who may be affected. Isolation can impact those who have caught the virus but also those who are fearful due to health conditions or vulnerability, those who have been instructed to stay off work or school and those who feel unable to effectively fulfil their calling. The following blog from ChinaSource adopts a Christian perspective and reflects on how we can still serve effectively in the face of a pandemic.

JOIN US IN PRAYER

We know that nothing is impossible for God so please join us in praying for an end to this outbreak. Special thanks to our members SIM for the helpful prayer points they have produced to guide us in prayer. We will regularly be praying as a staff team for the crisis, our members and all those affected by the impact of this virus.
