The Forgotten Half – the changing role of women in Muslim contexts
The Global Connections Muslim World Forum continues to examine issues which are relevant to the work and activities of agencies and churches engaging with Muslims around the world and locally and the Forum meeting on Wednesday 24th October 2018, will look at related issues ...
The day will include speakers, discussion and time for prayer and networking.
We observe developments in many Muslim-majority contexts of the changing role of women; for example, the publicity over the change in rules concerning women driving in Saudi Arabia. We will survey the changes we are observing in many places at in government, business and education, as well as at lower socio-economic levels within society. What are articulate women saying, what changes have been achieved, what more are they seeking? What is happening amidst illiterate women? Who controls marriage, how are wives treated by their in-laws, what are the dynamics in families?
What are the implications for Muslim communities? In what ways are men being obliged to adapt; in what ways is change being welcomed and in what ways is it being resisted? How do these developments affect and interact with the widespread disillusionment with Islam felt by many Muslims? Much of what is written by self-declared ‘Muslim atheists’ is by men; do we see similar developments amongst women?
In development, gender issues are often seen as crucial; is the same also true for spiritual development? What are the emerging opportunities for engaging with Muslims, and for sharing the Good News?
Our considerations will be led by one of the founders of When Women Speak. Additional contributors will complement this introduction. Our speakers will use their experience of Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as their broader experiences.
