Poverty in Afghanistan: The country of Afghanistan is one of the world’s most complex humanitarian crises. It is characterised by conflict, displacement, natural hazards, and this year the Afghan people face a new crisis – hunger. The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have heightened the situation. 12.5 million people are severely food insecure and living below the poverty line. Those living in the remote Central Highlands region are most vulnerable. Please pray for families in the Central Highlands region who are hungry and face with a long, cold, harsh winter. Pray that they will receive nutritious food and water to survive now, and resources to grow their own food and ensure food security for the year ahead. Please pray for women and children suffering from malnutrition, that they will recover and learn how to stay healthy. Pray for protection over the Medair teams going the extra mile to reach vulnerable communities in the hardest to reach places.
Hunger crisis : South Sudan is among the top 10 extreme hunger hotspots in the world. The effects of Covid-19 have heighted the severe food crisis. More than 1.3 million under-five children are acutely malnourished – one of the highest rates in the world. Recent flooding in the country has increased food insecurity and left many without access to basic health and nutrition services. Please pray for vulnerable communities facing chronic hunger to receive nutritious food and water. Pray that Medair teams will be able to access areas affected by flooding to reach those in need. Pray for malnourished children to receive life-saving nutrition treatment to live healthy, happy lives and have hope for the future.
Beirut explosion damage: In August a devastating explosion ripped through the port area of Beirut leaving hundreds of people dead, thousands wounded and several thousand homeless. Medair launched an emergency response to help people in the Gemazye neighbourhood rebuild their homes and recover their lives. Please pray for hospitals and health centres that were damaged and are now stretched beyond capacity. Pray for Medair’s Emergency Response team to reach people in need of shelter, medical care and hygiene supplies. Pray for God to comfort those who lost homes and loved ones, that they may be able to begin to rebuild their lives.
Deyr rains impact displaced people : The capital, Mogadishu, has been a makeshift home for those fleeing war-torn provinces, with nearly half a million people displaced. The particularly heavy seasonal rains ‘Deyr’ have brought flooding with farmland, infrastructure and roads destroyed, prolonging the struggle of the already vulnerably displaced people. Medair is providing health and nutrition services, water and sanitation to flood-affected families. Pray for emergency provisions such as shelter and hygiene supplies, and water treatment equipment to be distributed to those in desperate need.
Devastation from torrential rains: Madagascar is in a state of emergency having been battered by torrential rains affecting over 125,000 people, although it has not been widely reported in the news. Medair, together with UNICEF, is reaching out to areas where the highest numbers of people are affected. Pray that those who have lost everything may be comforted by God’s presence. Pray that they will be able to access emergency items and shelter. Keep the people of Madagascar in prayer as we are currently in the cyclone season.
Kitchen gardens tackle food insecurity: Afghanistan is one of the poorest and most underdeveloped nations in the world. War, instability, and natural disasters have caused devastation and forced communities to flee from their homes. Families face regular life-threatening challenges such as malnutrition, preventable disease, complications in pregnancy, shortages of health clinics with skilled medical staff, and lack of safe drinking water and adequate hygiene. To tackle the food insecurity, Medair has introduced kitchen gardens for families in remote areas, teaching families to grow vegetables that provide essential nutrients in their families’ diets. Please pray that more women and families plant kitchen gardens and preserve the produce, which gives them access to food even though the coldest months often cut them off from the outside world. Please also pray for protection of communities who live in insecure areas in Afghanistan.
Suffering from malnutrition: Over four million people have been uprooted and displaced from their homes in South Sudan. Hunger is rampant and alarming levels of malnutrition are seen across the country, with some of the highest rates in the world. Please keep children who are suffering from malnutrition in your prayers. Pray that they will receive immediate therapy and recover quickly. Pray that more communities can be educated on preventative services and nutrition education.
Helping disabled Syrian refugees: Since the onset of the crisis in Syria, more than 1.5 million Syrians have fled to Lebanon to seek refuge. Around 12% of Syrian refugees have a physical and/or mental disability. Medair is the lead agency for shelter intervention for ‘People with Specific Needs’ in Lebanon. Please pray for increasing access to services for People Living with Mobility Impairment, e.g. physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. Please pray for increased access to psychosocial support for people living with a disability, their caregivers and families.
