Our name was inspired by a young king in 2 Kings 22-23.
Josiah was only eight years old when he became king of Judah. His father and grandfather were godless leaders who worshipped idols, but he chose a different path. When he was 16 years old, Josiah began seeking the God of his father David. He recovered the Scriptures, which had been lost, rebuilt the temple, which was in ruins, and led his nation to radical repentance. He was willing to take risks, challenge norms, and swim against the flow. By the time King Josiah was 26, God had used this young ruler to bring rival and lead his people back to the truth.
Today, Central and Eastern Europe desperately need their own Josiahs - young men and women who are willing and ready to lead people to Christ. In any given large city in Central and Eastern Europe, less than 1% of the young people have a personal relationship with Jesus, and there are fewer than three evangelical churches. In those churches, the youth worker is more than likely a first-generation Christian, a volunteer with very few resources, and little or no training in evangelism and discipleship, but on a mission to reach the other 99%.
Josiah Venture serves in 15 countries across central and eastern Europe, and partners each summer with over 100 local churches in these nations to organise evangelistic camps for young people. We need short-term teams and interns who will serve at these camps, teaching English, music, or sports, and be part of reaching this next generation for Christ.
We are seeing God change lives, and believe this is only the beginning. God is asking us to follow him as he continues to bring hope and life to this generation. Young Josiahs are waiting.
