When people move from temporary accommodation to tenancy, they usually move into empty properties, so, do they: 1) Take on loans to purchase basic household items? (thus risking debt and possible eviction later on) 2) Exist in a bare, concrete shell, often without flooring and with young children?
NewStarts addresses this dilemma by furnishing over 400 properties each year as a gift, to help people in this key transitionary moment, giving them the best possible chance of being able to maintain the positive momentum and move forward in their lives. Using a team of over 100 volunteers (mostly long term unemployed and socially isolated) we collect over 170 tonnes of unwanted, but quality household items, using a proportion of what we collect for donation and a proportion for sale at affordable prices.
NewStarts also operates a computer recycling programme, providing reconditioned I.T. hardware at low cost and an affordable I.T. trouble shooting team for the local community, as well as a small food bank. (many of our furniture beneficiaries require help with food) Prior to COVID-19, our food bank played a small, supporting role to our main offerings: furniture, computers and volunteer development.
